Planning for summer 2023
S.E. Alaska

Below are pictures of the paper maps that show our path from the mouth of the Columbia to Glacier Bay and then back. The route plan is below the maps. I know that we have too many places on the list  to see but sitting at home I don't know what to cut. If we get to 50% of the stops listed I think the plan will be a success.

The dates are for planning only, there are only two dates that are hard at this point. We have a friend flying in to spend time exploring with us. The weather and water conditions will dictate the schedule more than our desire to be at a given place. For instance, the schedule has us leaving Ilwaco headed for Westport on May3rd. Now do I expect that the tides to get over the Columbia bar, the ocean to lay down on May 3rd & 4th and daylight will all lineup because I put the plan in a spreadsheet last November, not likely. Last year the start of our trip was delayed by two weeks due to high water and debris flow.

RED dot = Headed north to Glacier Bay
GREEN dot = Headed South from Glacier Bay
BLUE dot = Glaciers

All mileages below are nautical miles (~ 15% longer than statute miles). A good estimate for travel speed is 8kn/hr for cruising. For the total miles listed below we will be running about 420 hours burning about 4 g/hr.

Planning has entailed going through cruising guides, seminars, current atlases, tide tables and more websites than I can count.

Learning from last year: I have the site open so you don't need to login to make a comment. I hate having to login to every site. The downside is that all comments are anonymous. If you want us to know who made the comment or a personal reply please leave your initials or name in the comment body.
