We got underway on June 27th allowing the high water and current to subside. The debris was much better than two weeks ago but there is still a lot of current, probably should have waited another week. I held off writing that were getting started again to see if we could make it through the lock at Bonneville. With the current below the dam there was a real possibility that we didn’t have enough power to overtake the current. We did make it through and are at Hood River, and will do some looking around town today.
Day 1: Left St Helens about 9:00 AM and quickly found that
it was going to be a slow trip. It took 5 hours to get to Government Island where
we spent the night.
Day 2: Left Government Island about 9:00 AM headed to Beacon
Rock. The current varied wildly through the day with lows around Camas at 3.2 knots
and up to 8 knots. Approaching Beacon Rock, the water was getting rough and
with the current docking was a challenge.
Day 3: Called the lock at 7:00 AM to notify them we were on
the way. The lock operator said he would let us in when we got there instead of
waiting for the 9:00 AM appointed time. The 4 miles took about an hour while
increasing the RPM well above where we normally run. We got in to the lock with
no drama, tied to the bollard, used the thrusters and boat hook to stay off the
wall on the way up. I think Bonneville lift was only about 50 feet. On the way
to Hood River the current remained strong and the wind got stronger making for
several miles of 4-foot waves. The wind boarders enjoyed the water conditions
more than we did. It settled a little just before getting to Hood River harbor.
Great pictures and glad things are BETTER for a smoother sailing or should say a better boat ride.
ReplyDeleteGood job getting through your first lock! 👏 Great pictures. Are you able to label them? Lynn
ReplyDeleteApparently if life isnt scaring the crap out of you, you're doing it wrong. So I think you got this.
