Day 14; May 12: We left the anchorage this morning and virtually went next door to Namu. Namu was a large cannery that was abandoned when fishing collapsed. The buildings and the machinery look to have been left as is when everyone left. We then went to Shearwater Resort at Bella Bella. We are spending two nights tied up to do laundry and other chores. Started the chores with a burger and a beer for lunch. Two years ago, they had brought in a chief and had a good selection of things to eat, we had shrimp linguine in alfredo sauce. Now it is little more than sandwiches and pizzas.
Day 15; May 13: This place has both potable water and
non-potable water. Potable water is only allowed to go into the water tank, no
washing. Based on the taste of the water from the restaurant we didn’t put any
water in the tank. I did use the non-potable water to wash salt off the windows.
Wow it was really brown, it did ok with the salt but then I needed to clean up
from the brown water. I have also heard it called cedar water, where the water
turns brown from the cedar roots in the aquifer. We decided to go to dinner,
the waitress let us no there were no pizzas or Ruben's. The burger was ok.
Day 16; May 14: Left Shearwater about 7:30 AM with a plan to
go to bottleneck Inlet about 60 miles away. We had favorable current most of
the day so arrived earlier than planned. We decided to go a little farther to Khutze
Inlet. Looking at the weather we decided to accelerate the plan for crossing
Dixon Entrance (the last unprotected water entering Alaska). The weather this
year has been much different from two years ago. Most days have been bright and
sunny VS rainy, gray and cool. This year has also brought wind; we raced to get
across cape caution due to winds lasting a week. Now there a gale force winds
predicted for Dixon entrance for Monday. If we cross Dixon on Saturday, we can
get tied up in Ketchikan Sunday and the wind can blow Monday.
Based on last year we expected to see a lot of waterfalls
today but there haven’t been many. There are many places we can tell where
falls would be but they are dry. We are speculating the winter was warmer and
not as much snow as in the past. Climate change, no fake news here.
Day 17; May 15: Got out of the anchorage about 7:00 AM and
headed to Klewnuggit Inlet. This is our first really gray day so far. It has
rained all but an hour, not heavy, just enough to keep everything wet. The only
whale we have seen was while we were getting over the Columbia Bar. The weather
on the ocean is again blowing hard with gale force winds today. On the inside I
didn’t anything above 10kts, just the way I like it.
