Day 62, 6/30: We had a leisurely
get-up this morning because we needed to time our departure with Sergius Narrows. We spotted a mom and a cub but they were to far away for our cameras. We were 30 minutes away and slack was at 9:24. We went through right at slack
with two boats close behind and several boats coming toward us they were
farther away. There is a narrow spot just after Sergius once through there a
160’ yacht towing a 30’ dinghy with 3 outboard engines passed us. After a lot
of traffic through the narrow passages, we arrived at Sitka.
Day 63, 7/1: We did a little
looking around town but there were a lot of places closed that we didn’t expect
since it was Saturday (no cruise ships in town today). We went back to the boat
picked up laundry and headed off to the laundromat. We went down to the closest
bar for a drink and found that it was the busiest bar I have ever been in. It
is one of two bars in this part of town, with class reunions happening and
fireworks later it was busy and loud. Back to the boat to catch the fireworks
at 11:30, its nearly dark then. It was a good show.
Day 64, 7/2: We went to the
National Historic Totem Park and hiked the trails, went to the Russian Bishops
House but timing didn’t workout for a tour and went through the Russian
Orthodox Church. The town was significantly busier than yesterday with 2 ships
in port. We couldn’t get into any place to have lunch until we got past the
tourist areas. We went out to dinner after the ships were gone; this was the
last day our friend was with us. He stayed in a hotel tonight so he would have a shuttle to
the airport at 4:30 AM.
Day 65, 7/3: Went to the grocery store
close to the marina to re-provision. It was a nice medium sized store but we
will need to go back. They didn’t have any lettuce, milk or tomatoes. I ran the
propane tank up to top it off and it only took 1.3 gallons not bad for 2 months
of cooking. Later we went to the fish plant and got a couple pieces of fish and
went to the fishing and marine store.
