Day 46, 6/14: We had a long day that started late waiting
for the tide to exit Fords Terror. The predicted time window was 11:33-12:03.
We were exiting with two other boats that were in the lead. The first boat went through
with a lot of current coming in so the two of us waited 10-15 minutes before
exiting at 12:00. There was a sail boat waiting to get in, after we exited
they went in about 10 minutes later.
We headed to Dawes Gacier about 20 miles up Endicott Arm. It
was a slow go for the last half picking our way through the ice. There were
larger icebergs than we saw up Tracy Arm. We probably got about 2 miles a away
and that was probably closer than we should have gone through the ice. We had a
few chunks that we hit that were larger than we thought they were. Once we were
done, we turned around and headed to Taku Harbor about 20 miles south of
Juneau. After we were out of the ice, it was a pleasant ride that got better
when we saw some whales. It appeared that there were adults and youngsters that
were breaching. After they were on there way we continued on and arrived at a
dock in Taku Harbor at 8:00 PM.
Day 47, 6/15: We got going at 7:30 to do the 20 miles to
Juneau. The next two days are predicted to be really wet combined with high
winds. Spaces were at a premium due to the flotillas that were ahead of us but
the harbor master moved some boats to make room for us. We got tied up, signed
in, and went to lunch near the cruise ship area. The rain started and was as
heavy as predicted.
Day 48, 6/16: The weather still wet and windy,
glad we are tied to the dock. Later in the day we went on a mine tour and
panned for gold. We got e few flakes that were about 1/8 the size of a dandruff
flake. We stopped to have a drink before we headed back to the boat for dinner.
We got soaked on our way back, luckily the wind was at our backs.
Mining for gold, very cool.
