Day 36, 6/4: Rain, rain, and more rain. The major activity
of the day was to keep the windows clear as it rained 1.5” with no breaks until
late evening.
Day 37, 6/5: We decided to go to Petersburg rather than
anchor another night before going to Petersburg. We went through Wrangell
Narrows that is more river like with narrow shallow areas. There are more buoys
marking the channel in the narrows than we have seen in the rest of Alaska. We
tied up in the end slip next to the river so at times it was a bumpy spot.
Folks really don’t follow the no wake signs.
Day 38, 6/6: Spent the day looking around town or should I
say we spent an hour or two. Population 3300 that is said to double in the
summer. Not a lot of fishing going on yet. The boat next to us was from Chinook
Wa. and he was headed to the Aleutian Islands for Sockeye but had to order a part
from the east coast.
Day 39, 6/7: Did some work on the boat plumbing system. I am
sparing the details. Also got a few loads of laundry done. I don’t do much for
laundry but I pull a mean wagon.
Day 40, 6/8: We had a friend fly in to join us. So, once he
was here, we did the long tour of town and had some lunch.
Day 41, 6/9: Completed chores like dumping garbage and
shopping. We went for a drink, hitting both bars in town that were dead when we
arrived but the second one started hopping after a short time.
Day 42, 6/10: Went from Petersburg to Cannery Cove in Pybus
bay. We had good water until we were an hour out and it got bumpy until just
before we arrived to the anchorage. We saw a few spouts from a whale, Dall’s porpoises,
Otters and a deer. Once in the anchorage a flotilla with nine boats joined us.
Day 43, 6/11: The flotilla cleared out early and I was afraid
they would be going to the same anchorage we planned for but luckily, they didn’t.
We set out to go to Tracy arm cover about half way we saw some spouting in the distance
so we changed our course to get closer. Then 2 Humpbacks came at us and gave us
a show up close and then there were other a little farther off. In total there
were 5-6 whales over a 45-minute period. We are anchored in Tray Arm Cove to go
up Tracy Arm tomorrow to see Sawyer North and south glaciers.
