Day 49, 6/17: The weather improved substantially, it got to 70+ as we did more provisioning at a large IGA that was about ½ mile from Harris marina. Prices were higher than the ad from Fred Meyer but not lower enough to justify a $28 Uber (one-way).
Day 50, 6/18: Sunday we did some walking around near cruise
ship central. Even though I knew there were a lot of jewelry stores at the
cruise ship stops I was still amazed at the sheer number of jewelry stores. We
had dinner at Tracy’s Crab Shack 2 that was closer to the harbor than the original
location.
Day 51, 6/19: Over the weekend I had a tooth that was
getting progressively sorer. I got an appointment at 11 to get in and as luck
would have it, the tooth started feeling better just before the appointment. I
left with a prescription, well wishes and the expectation it will need to be
pulled sometime in the future. So we needed to get to Fred Meyer to get the prescription
filled so we got on the bus to get there and surprisingly we got on the right
bus to get back to the harbor (World Travelers). Meanwhile, we have been waiting for a package that was shipped overnight
air on Thursday. The package got to Juneau at 12:30 and we had it delivered to
the harbor at 4 PM. Now it is time to go.
Day 52, 6/20: Started out at 6 AM headed to Hoonah about 70
miles away. The trip started out smooth passing two cruise ships headed into
Juneau for the day. A little later several whale watching boats passed us
looking for whales. We watched the boats and around them and we saw a few. Then
by the time we got to Point Retreat there was a large cluster of boats right on
the route I had programmed into the autopilot. We got a great show from several
whales feeding, including bubble net feeding. They were too close for comfort. After
we were on our way again the water turned snotty. That was about 10:30 and we
got into Hoonah at 1:30. Holding on and taking water over the bow was the
standard for the three hours. The big surprise is that they have built cruise
ship docks and infrastructure to make it a new stop in Alaska. Icy Strait Point
is now a stop that several ships stop daily. They have built shops, zip lines
and gondola to the top of the hill. The gondola is new this year. The point is
about 2.5 miles from town so there are buses running between town and the point.
Day 53, 6/21: The dock we are at doesn’t have power or
water. So, to clean the salt off the windows we fired up the water maker and
used the long hose to get around the windows. We tried the highest rated restaurant
for lunch, it wasn’t great but not bad either. After lunch we went to the point
and rode the gondola to the top of the hill. The gondolas rises 1800' from the base, there are actually two gondolas one leads to the other with little rise the second one did most of the vertical rise. I still don't like heights! The views were breath taking but
we didn’t have time to get off since they were closing. Leaving tomorrow to
Glacier Bay.
